Building on previous purchases of both the 2020-2022 and the 2023-2024 collections, we are pleased to announce that thanks to Cambridge University STEMM Libraries the CABI digital library 2025 ebook collection has been purchased in perpetuity. Approximately 80 new titles will be included in this collection, and records will continue to be added to iDiscover as titles are published throughout this year. Available titles can also be searched on the CABI Digital Library.

The new ebooks cover a range of subjects, including agriculture, animal welfare, veterinary and animal sciences, biotechnology, and plant sciences. The collection will be useful for those studying Biological Sciences and particularly Plant Sciences, as well as having wider applicability to the Humanities and Social Sciences. All titles are unlimited access and DRM free.

Please see below for a selection of new titles, with links to their iDiscover records beneath the images.

New resource: CABI Cases

We are also pleased to announce that a new resource has been purchased by Cambridge University STEMM Libraries from CABI, called CABI Cases. This is a new product offered by CABI, and access has been purchased for specific year collections across three Cases: ‘CABI Cases: Animal Behaviour and Welfare’ (2022-24); ‘CABI Cases: Animal Science’ (2024); and ‘CABI Cases: Plant Health’ (2023-24). The Cases are composed of case studies covering subjects such as forestry and food, agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, human health, and much more. In total, we have access to over 110 case studies across the three purchased collections.

As CABI notes, the Cases present “practical, educational case studies” which “support study, research and practice… They are written by leading international practitioners and academics and peer-reviewed to ensure quality.” The case studies will again be of particular interest to disciplines within Biological Sciences and Plant Sciences, and the Humanities and Social Sciences. The collections of Cases noted above have been purchased in perpetuity, and they can be accessed both through iDiscover and the ebooks@cambridge libguide.

Please do get in touch with us at ebooks@cambridge if you have any questions or would like to know more about either the CABI 2025 ebook collection or CABI Cases.

Collections update: Springer STEMM EBAs 2024-25 & Springer Synthesis 2024

Renewal: Biomedical & Life Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics & Statistics EBAs

We are pleased to announce that we have renewed our three popular Springer ebook EBA subscriptions (Biomedical & Life Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics & Statistics) for another year. This “rolling” subscription model covers the four most recent years (2021-24, over 8,600 titles), so that Cambridge users will always have access to the most up-to-date research, conference publications and teaching works in these collections, including new content as it’s published through the rest of 2024. All available title records are searchable in iDiscover.

These subscriptions are also Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) schemes, which means that Cambridge STEMM Librarians use the full annual subscription fees to purchase perpetual access to the most popular and useful titles from the subscriptions. Subject Librarians selected 155 titles from our previous years subscription and these are now permanently owned outright. Please see below for examples of recently purchased ebooks across the three subject areas. The titles are hyperlinked and will take you to the relevant book on the SpringerLink platform.

Purchase: Springer Synthesis Collection of Technology 2024

The Synthesis 2024 collection has been purchased in perpetuity; this adds to the previously purchased annual collections and coverage now spans publication years 2005-2024.

To quote from the publishers’ website;

“The Synthesis Collection of Technology provides coverage of leading edge topics across the fields of Engineering and Computer Science. Books in this collection are based on techniques, reviews and course notes and defined as “lectures”. These are short, focused books, consisting of around 75-150 pages, bridging the gap between a journal article and an average book. These books tend to have rapid development cycles, publishing research on hot topics as soon as these emerge. Besides emerging topics, Synthesis books also contain principles, fundamentals, methods, models and applications containing practical, accessible information on recent innovations in fast-moving research areas.”

All records are available in iDiscover. Please see below for a sample list of titles from the 2024 collection (there are approximately 115 new titles being added). The links will take you directly to the relevant ebook on SpringerLink:

Notable titles in the database include the APA Handbook of Psychotherapy (two volumes)

From APA: This indispensable handbook captures the most representative ways in which psychotherapists characterize the driving forces behind their foundational therapeutic approaches. The 50 chapters represent the latest thinking and evidence on the most relevant topics across the “big four” psychotherapy domains of theory, research, practice, and training.

Other highlights include:

  • new releases from all titles in the APA Handbooks in Psychology® series, including Psychotherapy (see above), Research Methods, Neuropsychology, and Adolescent and Young Adult Development

The database includes classic texts (many out-of-print and hard to find) and older historical works, offering an insight into developments in the field of psychology over the course of history up to the present day. One of the older works in the collection is A treatise of the passions and faculties of the soul of man, with the several dignities and corruptions thereunto belonging (1656) by Edward Reynolds, bishop of Norwich. His writings range across such hefty subjects as the soul, errors, anger, shame, fear, self-confidence, joy, hope and love. Here is an example chapter:

Of other causes of delight, unexpectedness of a good, strength of desire, imagination, imitation, fitness and accommodation. Of the effects of this passion, reparation of nature, dilatation. Thirst in noble objects, satiety in baser, whetting of industry. A timorous unbelief

For more current writings on psychology, please see below for a sample of available titles from the APA 2024 collection. The hyperlinked titles in the list will take you to the corresponding works on EBSCOhost.

We hope that you will find the APA PsycBooks database a useful resource. Please do get in touch if you have any questions or issues with access. Write to us at ebooks@lib.cam.ac.uk.

Ebooks in 2020-21: Biological Sciences

We have given a broad overview of title-by-title ebooks and subscription packages acquired in 2020-21, but we thought it would also be useful to highlight and revisit some of the acquisitions made by individual Schools over the last academic year. To kick us off, this blog post will look at titles acquired by the School of Biological Sciences.

Subscriptions

A strong addition to Biological Sciences teaching and research in 2020-21 was the Ovid LWW Health Library – International Anatomy Collection, which is available to all Cambridge users with a Raven log-in.

The Anatomy Collection is a particularly useful teaching and learning resource for students of PDN and Medicine, and features key textbooks on Anatomy, Histology, Embryology and Neuroscience, as well as a video library, case studies, and a customisable quizzing tool for exam preparation and self-assessment.

A full list of textbook titles and links is available below. New editions are added when they are published.

Users will need to create a My Health Library personal account via the collection homepage in order to print chapters and to bookmark favourite books, chapters, tables and figures. Please see the blogpost here for further information.
