Completing the Springer EBA trilogy, we are also pleased to announce that the Springer Biomedical and Life Sciences EBA has been renewed for another year. As with both the Springer Mathematics and Statistics EBA, and Springer Engineering EBA, this rolling subscription model provides access to the last four years of publications (2022-2025). The Biomedical and Lifesciences EBA makes available over 2,900 DRM-free ebooks and conference proceedings, covering subjects such as: agriculture, plant sciences, biotechnology, and food science.

A link filtering for subscribed material can be accessed via the ebooks@cambridge libguide, under ‘Find ebooks’. Records to titles can also be found on iDiscover, with new texts added as they are published. As an Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) scheme, the full annual subscription fee will be used by Cambridge STEMM librarians to purchase perpetual access to the most popular titles. Titles from the previous yearly subscription, covering the years 2021-2024, have recently been selected and are now available in perpetuity.

Collections update: Bloomsbury Collections EBA 2025-26

The ebooks@cambridge team is pleased to announce the launch of an evidence-based acquisitions (EBA) scheme for titles hosted on the Bloomsbury Collections platform. This is the second EBA scheme Cambridge University Libraries have offered for Bloomsbury published ebooks (the first scheme ran during the 2023-24 academic year). This new scheme allows us to open up unlimited concurrent and DRM-free access to over 4500 titles. The content opened up for access cover many 2024-2025 published subject collections as well as thousands of older publications included in archive collections across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Frontlist subjects include Archaeology, Architecture, Arts and Visual Culture, Asia Studies, Classical Studies, Creative Writing, Design, Education, Film and Media, History, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Middle East, Music and Sound, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Religious Studies and Theology. Backlist titles cover African Studies, Biblical Studies, Cultural Studies, Development and Economics, Drama and Performance, Fashion, Gender and Sexuality, and Latin American Studies and also reflect the frontlist subjects mentioned previously.

These titles are searchable in iDiscover until the end of July 2026, when a selection of 45-50 popular titles will be permanently purchased.

Please see below for a glimpse of what’s available in this new scheme. The iDiscover links are displayed above the relevant book jacket illustrations.

New ebook collections: Bloomsbury Subject Collections EBA 2021-2023

The ebooks@cambridge team is pleased to announce the launch of a new evidence-based (EBA) scheme which has allowed us to open up unlimited DRM-free access to around 1,850 extra titles on the Bloomsbury Collections platform. All titles published (and to be published) 2021-2023 in the following subject collections are included;

Africa, Asia and Latin American Studies; Art & Visual Culture; Biblical Studies; Classical Studies & Archaeology; Design; Education; Fashion; Film & Media Studies; History; Linguistics; Literary Studies; Middle East; Music & Sound Studies; Philosophy; Politics & International Relations; Religious Studies; and Theology.

These titles will be searchable in iDiscover until the end of July 2024, when a selection of around 55 of the most popular books, chosen in consultation with your faculty and College librarians, will be permanently purchased.

This is a fantastic new ebooks scheme which opens up a greater breadth of Bloomsbury ebooks for students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences than ever before. De Gruyter EBA: renewed for 2024

The UL’s evidence-based (EBA) scheme with De Gruyter has been renewed for another calendar year, taking it through to the end of 2024. Funded jointly by the UL’s Collection and Academic Liaison (from the English and German budgets), it will give Cambridge readers unlimited, DRM-free access to approximately 120,500 titles. As well as the various De Gruyter imprints, there are nearly thirty partner presses who participate in the EBA, including Edinburgh University Press, Gorgias Press, and Princeton University Press, among others. Records for titles are loaded monthly by the ebooks@cambridge team.

The EBA has now been running since 2016. With each renewal, we pay a deposit, and at the end of the period of the agreement, we are given the usage statistics and can select titles up to the value of the deposit, which we will then own in perpetuity, regardless of whether or not we continue with the EBA. Each year, we are generally able to purchase between 700 and 800 titles for permanent access.

This selection process normally takes place at the start of the year, so we will be selecting titles based on 2023 usage in January or February of 2024. If there are any titles you would like to recommend for permanent access, please do get in touch with the English Collections team (engcc@lib.cam.ac.uk).

Oxford Scholarship Online and Oxford Handbooks Online: renewed for 2023-24

I’m pleased to be able to say that the UL has renewed its evidence-based acquisition scheme (EBA) with Oxford Scholarship Online for another year, taking it to the end of June 2024. The scheme is quite straightforward: we pay a deposit upfront to Oxford University Press, and thousands of OUP ebooks are made available to us (unlimited and DRM-free) on the Oxford Academic platform, with new titles being added every month. At the end of the twelve-month period of the agreement, we use the deposit to purchase titles for perpetual access. This year, the EBA is being funded by the UL’s Collections and Academic Liaison, with the Squire Law Library paying for the Law module of the scheme. As we have agreed the EBA for another year, our access to all the unowned content will continue seamlessly.

We have also purchased the 2023 updates for all of the Oxford Handbooks Online. Like OSO, the OHO platform is updated monthly, with new chapters being uploaded; the print edition of each handbook is only issued once it is complete, so our OHO access means that we have the most up-to-date access to the content.

A selection of some of the most heavily used titles on the Oxford Scholarship Online platform over the past twelve months can be seen below (click here to skip to the list of iDiscover links). If you have any questions about either resource, please do get in touch with the English Collections team (engcc@lib.cam.ac.uk).

De Gruyter EBA renewal (2023)

I’m pleased to announce that the UL’s evidence-based (EBA) scheme with De Gruyter has been renewed for another calendar year. Funded jointly by the UL English and German budgets, it will give Cambridge readers access to approximately 114,500 titles in 2023. As well as the various De Gruyter imprints, there are nearly thirty partner presses (chiefly US-based) who participate in the EBA, such as Harvard, New York, and Texas University Press. A new partner press is Berghahn Books, whose content has started to be added to the platform (and appearing in iDiscover).

The EBA has now been running since 2016. With each renewal, we pay a deposit, and at the end of the period of the agreement, we are given the usage statistics and can select titles up to the value of the deposit, which we will then own in perpetuity, regardless of whether or not we continue with the EBA. Each year, we are generally able to purchase between 700 and 800 titles, all with unlimited and DRM-free access.

We will soon be starting this selection process for the past calendar year. A handful of titles purchased based on 2021 usage can be seen below (click here to skip to the list of iDiscover links). If you have any questions about the De Gruyter EBA, please do get in touch with the English Collections team (engcc@lib.cam.ac.uk).

De Gruyter EBA: renewed for 2022

I’m pleased to announce that the UL’s evidence-based (EBA) scheme with De Gruyter has been renewed for another calendar year. Funded jointly by the UL English and German budgets, it gives Cambridge readers access to approximately 92,000 titles. These are made up of the the outputs of the various De Gruyter imprints, as well as 23 (mainly US-based) partner presses who participate in the EBA, including Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, and Harvard University Press; Edinburgh University Press is one of the most recent additions to the partner press list, and their content should start to appear on the De Gruyter platform (and in iDiscover) in 2022.

The EBA has now been running since 2016. With each renewal, we pay a deposit, and at the end of the period of the agreement, we are given the usage statistics and can select titles up to the value of the deposit, which we will then own in perpetuity, regardless of whether or not we continue with the EBA. Each year, we generally purchase somewhere in the region of 750-800 titles, across a variety of subject areas.

We will soon be starting this selection process for the past calendar year. A handful of titles purchased based on 2020 usage can be seen below.

If you have any questions about the EBA, please do get in touch with the English Collections team (engcc@lib.cam.ac.uk).

Oxford Scholarship Online EBA: titles purchased for 2021

The UL has had an evidence-based acquisition scheme with Oxford University Press, using their Oxford Scholarship Online platform, since 2015. Each year, we pay a deposit, and are granted access to titles on OSO in subject areas in the arts and humanities; at the end of the term of the agreement, we then use the deposit to select a number of ebooks for outright purchase.

We renewed this scheme over the summer, and will continue to have access to the EBA titles on Oxford Scholarship Online until at least the end of next June. We’ve now finished our selection of ebooks to buy with last year’s deposit, and we have been able to purchase 150 in total. Thanks go to all the faculty and departmental librarians who sent in suggestions of titles which it would be particularly useful to own in perpetuity! A selection of recent (2020 and 2021) ebooks to which we now have permanent, unlimited and DRM-free access can be seen below.

New titles are added to the OSO platform each month, so the number of titles we can access keeps growing. If you have any questions about the scheme, please get in touch with the English Collections team (engcc@lib.cam.ac.uk).
