University of Cambridge registered students and staff have temporary access to ebook titles included in the following collections on Elsevier’s ScienceDirect platform; “All Access”, “Freedom Collection 2020” and “Freedom Collection Backlist” ebooks, until the 31st of July 2020.

Reading books offline using the App

Make sure you have a personal account on Al-Manhal and you are signed in.

• Add your favorite titles to your bookshelf using the side-bar tool called ‘Add to Bookshelf’.

• Download the Al Manhal App on your device from Apple Appstore or Google Play Store.

• From within the app choose ‘Sync with Platform’ option from the side navigation menu.

• Sign in using your Platform credentials, then the Sync will automatically begin!

• All books currently present on your Platform Bookshelf will be listed on the App for you to download any of them.

Kortext’s Free Student eTextbook Programme (FSTP)

Kortext, a UK based eTextbook provider, have joined with Jisc, the UK’s not for profit education and research services provider, to launch the Free Student eTextbook Programme (FSTP). Cambridge University Libraries have registered with this scheme, and your library staff are busy liaising with Kortext to develop a growing and bespoke collection of textbooks which University of Cambridge registered students and staff can access online until the 31st of July 2020.

Textbook titles published by key academic publishers including Pearson, Cengage, Taylor & Francis, John Wiley & Sons, Macmillan Education, SAGE Publishing, McGraw Hill Education, Oxford University Press, Elsevier and many others will be included in this collection. The titles are available for unlimited concurrent use and there are no restrictions on how many titles you can consult and keep on your Kortext bookshelf.

At the moment the available bespoke collection is relatively small, but it will soon increase in size and scope, to include titles from prestigious academic series such as Oxford World’s Classics, Blackstone’s Statutes, and many many more of Cambridge’s most popular reading list titles.

If you find a book you are interested in, click once on the appropriate hyperlink and then click on the link that appears above the link box. If it’s your first time logging in to Kortext this will take you to the page shown below, where you will need to type Cambridge in the box asking for the name of your organisation. You will then have the option to select University of Cambridge.

You will be taken via your Raven login to the following form where you can create a personal account on Kortext. If you already have a Kortext account then you can opt to sign in rather than register a new account. Please ensure you use your @cam email address to create your account.

After you’ve signed up you will be able to access the full text of the book. Once inside a book, you can search for key terms, add highlights and bookmarks, print a number of pages, create personal notes and insert links to other content as well as collaborating with your peers. Once you you have consulted a title, it will remain on your own personalised bookshelf until the 30th June 2020.

A small selection of textbook titles from those which are available now are displayed below. More titles will be added on a regular basis so please keep revisiting the title list to check for updates in your subject. Unfortunately it won’t be possible to make available title records searchable in iDiscover.

VitalSource Helps – temporary etextbook content for students

VitalSource is an education technology solutions provider committed to helping education partners create, deliver, and distribute affordable, accessible, and impactful learning experiences worldwide. To assist students during the COVID-19 lockdown the publishers listed below are offering free access to ebooks across all subjects, on the VitalSource platform until the 30th of June 2020. It’s important to note that there is a limit of 7 ebook title downloads per user, so choose your titles carefully.

Publishers offering temporary free ebook access

To sign up for an account on VitalSource Helps, click on the link below and register for an account, using your university @cam email address.

You will need to verify your email address by clicking the “confirm your email” link in the automatic email that VitalSource will send you. Once you are logged in you can “Explore”; search for book titles in the search bar, browse which titles are most popular or have been most recently added to the platform. The platform will present “top picks” based on your previous title searches.

Once you have selected a title you are interested to read, click on the cover to “borrow” it until the 30th June. The title is then added to your library for you to read online. There are various functionalities included in the online reader to help you navigate the content, search within the books, make notes or highlights, print, share, cite, a read aloud feature, and the ability to create flashcards to help with revision.
