New ebook: Wiley Cancer Handbook

A new online resource is available for students of Medicine! The Cancer Handbook from the Wiley Online Major Reference Work series was purchased this summer (July 2023) by the ebooks@cambridge team and is now owned in perpetuity.

Per Wiley, this text provides a comprehensive overview of cancer research and oncology. Articles are divided into the following sections : The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Cancer, The Causation and Prevention of Cancer, Systematic Oncology, Preclinical Models for Human Cancer, The Treatment of Cancer, and Archive. There is also an extensive glossary that defines technical terms and provides a useful reference for readers. This is a second edition and all sections of the Handbook have been revised and updated, excluding imaging. 

Articles in the handbook include Cell and Tissue Organization, Mechanisms and Management of Cancer Pain, Genetic Susceptibility to Cancer, Human DNA Tumour Viruses, RNA Tumour Viruses, Genomic Instability and DNA Repair, Telomerase, Apoptosis, and Signalling by Steroid Receptors, Stem Cells and Tumourigenesis, and Occupational Causes of Cancer among many others.  There are 136 articles in total.

New Brill online resource: Encyclopedia of Early Christianity Online

The ebooks@cambridge team is pleased to announce the purchase of another Brill online reference work: the Encyclopedia of Early Christianity Online. Funded jointly by the UL’s Collections and Academic Liaison, the ebooks@cambridge service, and the Divinity Faculty Library, it will eventually comprise 1300 articles, with planned completion in 2022. We have perpetual access to this resource, and hope that it will be valuable for both students and researchers.

From the Brill website: The Brill Encyclopedia of Early Christianity (BEEC) focuses on the history of early Christianity, covering texts, authors, and ideas. The BEEC aims both to provide a critical review of the methods used in Early Christian Studies and also to update the history of scholarship.

The BEEC addresses a range of traditions, including iconographic, martyrological, ecclesiastical, and Christological traditions, as well as cultic phenomena, such as the veneration of saints. The history of the transmission of texts and the attention to recent scholarship will play an important role. The BEEC focuses on early Christianity from a historical perspective in order to uncover the lasting legacy of the authors and texts until the present day. Its content is intended to bridge the gap between the fields of New Testament studies and patristics, covering the whole period of early Christianity up to 600 CE.

New Brill online resource: Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism

The ebooks@cambridge team is pleased to announce the purchase of a new reference work: Brill’s Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism Online, jointly funded by ebooks@cambridge and the UL’s Collections and Academic Liaison. We now have perpetual access to this resource, and hope that it will be a valuable resource for students and researchers.

From the Brill site: Brill’s Encyclopedia of Global Pentecostalism Online (BEGP) provides a comprehensive overview of worldwide Pentecostalism from a range of disciplinary perspectives. It offers analysis at the level of specific countries and regions, historical figures, movements and organizations, and particular topics and themes. Pentecostal Studies draws upon areas of research such as anthropology, biblical studies, economics, gender studies, global studies, history, political science, sociology, theological studies, and other areas of related interest. The BEGP emphasizes this multi-disciplinary approach and includes scholarship from a range of disciplines, methods, and theoretical perspectives. Moreover, the BEGP is cross-cultural and transnational, including contributors from around the world to represent key insights on Pentecostalism from a range of countries and regions.

World Christianity Encyclopedia Online: now available!

The ebooks team is delighted to announce that Cambridge users now have access to the World Christianity Encyclopedia Online. It’s the online version of the third edition of the World Christian Encyclopedia (print copies of which are held in the Divinity Faculty Library and the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide), and is a major reference work for missionary and World Christianity studies. The online edition is fully text searchable, and contains cross references and additional photo material.

Two new Brill online encyclopedias

The ebooks@cambridge team is very pleased to be able to announce the acquisition of two new Brill online reference works: the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World, and the Encyclopedia of Buddhism Online. In both cases, the University of Cambridge now has perpetual access, and the purchase includes the cost of all future updates.

The Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World, purchased with funding from FAMES and ebooks@cambridge, is an expanded online version of the five-volume print encyclopedia, first published in 2010. It is updated with new material twice a year, and currently includes over 2,200 entries (and over 1.5 million words).

The Encyclopedia of Buddhism Online is another collaborative purchase, funded jointly by FAMES, Divinity, and the UL’s Collections and Academic Liaison. It will eventually comprise six thematically arranged volumes, of which the first two (Literature and Languages and Lives) are currently available; subsequent volumes will be added online once they have been published in print.
