Cambridge University Libraries are very pleased to announce that we now have access to the Springer Humanities & Social Sciences Reference Module (2000-2025). Records for all available reference works are now in iDiscover. Cambridge users can also access the collection via the “Springer Humanities & Social Sciences reference collection 2000-2025” entries in the A-Z Databases and on the ebooks@cambridge LibGuide.

This newly available collection comprises around 635 Humanities and Social Sciences reference titles, including encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries and atlases, which provide a great starting resource for any topic-based research. Each reference entry links to its primary and secondary sources, allowing researchers to trace the information trail and further enrich their understanding and knowledge.

Some titles in the collection are also available as living reference works, which are “online first, real-time snapshots (article collections) of a reference work which is in development or is being updated” and provide the latest and most up-to-date content well in advance of the final printed work.”

The living reference works are fully discoverable and citable with their own unique DOI, and updates undergo a rigorous editorial process before they are accepted for publication on the Springer Nature platform.

Two separate entries for the reference work The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Victorian Women’s Writing; the published (completed) first edition published in 2022, and the updating living edition.

The Humanities & Social Sciences Reference Module is written and curated by internationally renowned and award-winning experts. It will be of interest to many HSS disciplines and areas of research, including:

  • Archaeology
  • Business and Management
  • Economics
  • Education
  • History

This database provides access to 69,000 full-text, DRM-free chapters from over 4600 peer-reviewed scholarly and professional Psychology books, including reference works. The collection is updated monthly and ranges from the newest APA publications in the field to historical works dating back as far as the 1600s. It will be a valuable teaching and research resource for all branches of Psychology, as well as Clinical Medicine, Education, the History and Philosophy of Science, Sociology and more.

Records for all 4600 plus books are now available in iDiscover with more to be added as the collection is updated. Users can also access the PsycBooks homepage via the “PsycBooks (via EBSCOHost)” entry in the A-Z Databases.

Notable titles in the database include the APA Handbook of Psychotherapy (two volumes)

From APA: This indispensable handbook captures the most representative ways in which psychotherapists characterize the driving forces behind their foundational therapeutic approaches. The 50 chapters represent the latest thinking and evidence on the most relevant topics across the “big four” psychotherapy domains of theory, research, practice, and training.

Other highlights include:

  • new releases from all titles in the APA Handbooks in Psychology® series, including Psychotherapy (see above), Research Methods, Neuropsychology, and Adolescent and Young Adult Development
  • online access to the APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of Psychology (8 volumes)
  • APA Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms®, which can be found via the menu bar at the top of the homepage

The database includes classic texts (many out-of-print and hard to find) and older historical works, offering an insight into developments in the field of psychology over the course of history up to the present day. One of the older works in the collection is A treatise of the passions and faculties of the soul of man, with the several dignities and corruptions thereunto belonging (1656) by Edward Reynolds, bishop of Norwich. His writings range across such hefty subjects as the soul, errors, anger, shame, fear, self-confidence, joy, hope and love. Here is an example chapter:

Of other causes of delight, unexpectedness of a good, strength of desire, imagination, imitation, fitness and accommodation. Of the effects of this passion, reparation of nature, dilatation. Thirst in noble objects, satiety in baser, whetting of industry. A timorous unbelief

For more current writings on psychology, please see below for a sample of available titles from the APA 2024 collection. The hyperlinked titles in the list will take you to the corresponding works on EBSCOhost.

We hope that you will find the APA PsycBooks database a useful resource. Please do get in touch if you have any questions or issues with access. Write to us at ebooks@lib.cam.ac.uk.

The final instalment! This blog post will look at new collections and title-by-title ebook purchases for Humanities and Social Sciences in 2020-21.

Collections

At the beginning of the year, we secured access to the Knowledge Unlatched Routledge African Studies Collection (partly funded by UL research budgets), which covers the current Routledge African Studies front list, including works on a wide range of social, political and economic issues by international scholars and scholars working within the continent. There are currently 23 titles in the collection, with further titles to be added throughout 2021-22. These DRM-free ebooks are hosted on the Taylor & Francis platform and can be found in iDiscover.

The most recently added titles include:

Earlier titles can also be found at this blog post.

For Law, we acquired the International Commercial Law (ICML) ebook module on the Oxford Legal Research Library (OLRL) platform, which was funded by the Squire. The module brings together key reference works in international commercial law and is an exceptional resource for researchers interested in the law of sale and contract, bringing together some of the leading works in the field. The collection includes key analysis and opinion on the law of sale and contract, carriage of goods, and payment for and administration of the sale of goods.

This new module complements the other two collections registered Cambridge users have access to on the OLRL platform; Financial and Banking Law and Private International Law. More information can be found here. A new Arbitration module will shortly be added to the Oxford Legal Research Library (OLRL), so watch this space!

In 2020-21, we also purchased permanent access to the three John Dewey components on Intelex Past Masters (partly funded by the Whipple Library and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science). These include John Dewey’s collected works (38 volumes from 1882-1953), class lectures, and extensive correspondence from different periods of his life.

We also acquired the Taylor & Francis HSS and STEM Archive collections, comprising research from 1800-1980 and including more than 6000 digitised DRM-free titles covering 25 key subject disciplines. These DRM-free ebooks are hosted on the Taylor & Francis platform and can be found in iDiscover.

Permanent access to John Dewey works on Intelex Past Masters

After a very successful trial, we are delighted to announce that Cambridge staff and students now have permanent access to the three John Dewey components on Intelex Past Masters. Providing readers with electronic access to Dewey’s works on anything like this scale is otherwise impossible for libraries, and we received particularly strong feedback from Humanities and Social Sciences students and academics in favour of permanent access. We are very grateful to the Whipple Library and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science for contributing to the cost of the purchase. The Dewey components are:

Dewey: Collected Works (Second Release)https://ezp.lib.cam.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.nlx.com/collections/133
Dewey: Correspondence, I-IVhttps://ezp.lib.cam.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.nlx.com/collections/132
Dewey: Lectures (2nd Release)https://ezp.lib.cam.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.nlx.com/collections/441

InteLex Dewey collections – temporary access until 14 April

Academic Rights Press has generously granted University of Cambridge registered staff and students temporary access to their Dewey collections until 14 April 2021.

Three Dewey collections are included on the Intelex Past Masters platform and should be of particular interest to those teaching and researching in HPS, Philosophy, Education, and Psychology:

Dewey: Collected Works (Second Release)

Dewey: Correspondence, I-IV

Dewey: Lectures (2nd Release)

Please tell us what you think of the Dewey collections using the feedback form.  Cambridge had trial access to these collections last year too, and we hope that this year’s repeat trial will demonstrate likely usage for sure.
